Hello, World! Welcome to my inaugural blog post; I’m Shashank Arun Sinha. I am a Doctor of Computer Science student at Colorado Technical University, focusing on Cybersecurity and Information Assurance. This platform is my way of exploring the digital security landscape.

In today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape, cities around the globe are becoming increasingly intelligent. They use technology to make municipal services more efficient, reduce environmental impact, and enhance overall urban living for their residents. However, cybersecurity is also a critical issue due to reliance on technology.

In this context, I have discovered my area of interest – the cybersecurity vulnerabilities of smart cities. A smart city can only be as smart as its security. In addition to becoming more connected, cities face a greater risk of cyberattacks. As technology advances, we open up more and more avenues for cyber attacks. Millions of interconnected ‘things’ are being deployed in smart cities worldwide. Cybercriminals and other harmful entities could exploit potential vulnerabilities in the Internet of Things (IoT) due to the surge in its use. Residents and government agencies may face grave risks if smart cities ignore cybersecurity, even though it enhances productivity and efficiency.

While smart cities employ progressive technology to enhance productivity and efficiency, it simultaneously amplifies the issues concerning safety, security, and data privacy. A smart city leverages state-of-the-art infrastructure and innovative solutions to boost operational performance, offer superior services, and enhance citizen well-being. Nonetheless, adopting avant-garde technologies brings with it the trials of managing cybersecurity threats.

My goal as a doctoral student is to learn how to protect smart cities from various cybersecurity vulnerabilities and how to implement strategies to do so. I hope to share my insights, observations, and learnings with you through this blog, opening a dialogue about how we can ensure a safe, technologically-advanced future for our cities.

I will continue to post about this fascinating, complex subject as we work through it.
